Firstly let me endower you with some fact about Nigeria and our mighty it was and i would first talk about the great Benin city now turned lost with no trace of his mightiness.

Benin City, the mighty medieval capital now lost without trace

This is the story of a lost medieval city you’ve probably never heard about. Benin City, originally known as Edo, was once the capital of a pre-colonial African empire located in what is now southern Nigeria. The Benin empire was one of the oldest and most highly developed states in west Africa, dating back to the 11th century.

The Guinness Book of Records (1974 edition) described the walls of Benin City and its surrounding kingdom as the world’s largest earthworks carried out prior to the mechanical era. According to estimates by the New Scientist’s Fred Pearce, Benin City’s walls were at one point “four times longer than the Great Wall of China, and consumed a hundred times more material than the Great Pyramid of Cheops”.

Situated on a plain, Benin City was enclosed by massive walls in the south and deep ditches in the north. Beyond the city walls, numerous further walls were erected that separated the surroundings of the capital into around 500 distinct villages.

Pearce writes that these walls “extended for some 16,000 km in all, in a mosaic of more than 500 interconnected settlement boundaries. They covered 6,500 sq km and were all dug by the Edo people … They took an estimated 150 million hours of digging to construct, and are perhaps the largest single archaeological phenomenon on the planet”.

Barely any trace of these walls exist today.

Benin City was also one of the first cities to have a semblance of street lighting. Huge metal lamps, many feet high, were built and placed around the city, especially near the king’s palace. Fueled by palm oil, their burning wicks were lit at night to provide illumination for traffic to and from the palace.

In 1691, the Portuguese ship captain Lourenco Pinto observed: “Great Benin, where the king resides, is larger than Lisbon; all the streets run straight and as far as the eye can see. The houses are large, especially that of the king, which is richly decorated and has fine columns. The city is wealthy and industrious. It is so well governed that theft is unknown and the people live in such security that they have no doors to their houses.”

In contrast, London at the same time is described by Bruce Holsinger, professor of English at the University of Virginia, as being a city of “thievery, prostitution, murder, bribery and a thriving black market made the medieval city ripe for exploitation by those with a skill for the quick blade or picking a pocket”.

African fractals

Benin City’s planning and design was done according to careful rules of symmetry, proportionality and repetition now known as fractal design. The mathematician Ron Eglash, author of African Fractals – which examines the patterns underpinning architecture, art and design in many parts of Africa – notes that the city and its surrounding villages were purposely laid out to form perfect fractals, with similar shapes repeated in the rooms of each house, and the house itself, and the clusters of houses in the village in mathematically predictable patterns.

As he puts it: “When Europeans first came to Africa, they considered the architecture very disorganised and thus primitive. It never occurred to them that the Africans might have been using a form of mathematics that they hadn’t even discovered yet.”

At the centre of the city stood the king’s court, from which extended 30 very straight, broad streets, each about 120-ft wide. These main streets, which ran at right angles to each other, had underground drainage made of a sunken impluvium with an outlet to carry away storm water. Many narrower side and intersecting streets extended off them. In the middle of the streets were turf on which animals fed.

“Houses are built alongside the streets in good order, the one close to the other,” writes the 17th-century Dutch visitor Olfert Dapper. “Adorned with gables and steps … they are usually broad with long galleries inside, especially so in the case of the houses of the nobility, and divided into many rooms which are separated by walls made of red clay, very well erected.”

Dapper adds that wealthy residents kept these walls “as shiny and smooth by washing and rubbing as any wall in Holland can be made with chalk, and they are like mirrors. The upper storeys are made of the same sort of clay. Moreover, every house is provided with a well for the supply of fresh water”.

Family houses were divided into three sections: the central part was the husband’s quarters, looking towards the road; to the left the wives’ quarters (oderie), and to the right the young men’s quarters (yekogbe).

Daily street life in Benin City might have consisted of large crowds going though even larger streets, with people colourfully dressed – some in white, others in yellow, blue or green – and the city captains acting as judges to resolve lawsuits, moderating debates in the numerous galleries, and arbitrating petty conflicts in the markets.

The early foreign explorers’ descriptions of Benin City portrayed it as a place free of crime and hunger, with large streets and houses kept clean; a city filled with courteous, honest people, and run by a centralised and highly sophisticated bureaucracy.

The city was split into 11 divisions, each a smaller replication of the king’s court, comprising a sprawling series of compounds containing accommodation, workshops and public buildings – interconnected by innumerable doors and passageways, all richly decorated with the art that made Benin famous. The city was literally covered in it.

The exterior walls of the courts and compounds were decorated with horizontal ridge designs (agben) and clay carvings portraying animals, warriors and other symbols of power – the carvings would create contrasting patterns in the strong sunlight. Natural objects (pebbles or pieces of mica) were also pressed into the wet clay, while in the palaces, pillars were covered with bronze plaques illustrating the victories and deeds of former kings and nobles.

At the height of its greatness in the 12th century – well before the start of the European Renaissance – the kings and nobles of Benin City patronised craftsmen and lavished them with gifts and wealth, in return for their depiction of the kings’ and dignitaries’ great exploits in intricate bronze sculptures.

“These works from Benin are equal to the very finest examples of European casting technique,” wrote Professor Felix von Luschan, formerly of the Berlin Ethnological Museum. “Benvenuto Celini could not have cast them better, nor could anyone else before or after him. Technically, these bronzes represent the very highest possible achievement.”

What impressed the first visiting Europeans most was the wealth, artistic beauty and magnificence of the city. Immediately European nations saw the opportunity to develop trade with the wealthy kingdom, importing ivory, palm oil and pepper – and exporting guns. At the beginning of the 16th century, word quickly spread around Europe about the beautiful African city, and new visitors flocked in from all parts of Europe, with ever glowing testimonies, recorded in numerous voyage notes and illustrations.

Lost world

Now, however, the great Benin City is lost to history. Its decline began in the 15th century, sparked by internal conflicts linked to the increasing European intrusion and slavery trade at the borders of the Benin empire.

Then in 1897, the city was destroyed by British soldiers – looted, blown up and burnt to the ground. My great grandparents were among the many who fled following the sacking of the city; they were members of the elite corps of the king’s doctors.

Nowadays, while a modern Benin City has risen on the same plain, the ruins of its former, grander namesake are not mentioned in any tourist guidebook to the area. They have not been preserved, nor has a miniature city or touristic replica been made to keep alive the memory of this great ancient city.

A house composed of a courtyard in Obasagbon, known as Chief Enogie Aikoriogie’s house – probably built in the second half of the 19th century – is considered the only vestige that survives from Benin City. The house possesses features that match the horizontally fluted walls, pillars, central impluvium and carved decorations observed in the architecture of ancient Benin.

Curious tourists visiting Edo state in Nigeria are often shown places that might once have been part of the ancient city – but its walls and moats are nowhere to be seen. Perhaps a section of the great city wall, one of the world’s largest man-made monuments, now lies bruised and battered, neglected and forgotten in the Nigerian bush.

Instead, if you wish to get a glimpse into the glorious past of the ancient Benin kingdom – and a better understanding of this groundbreaking city – you are better off visiting the Benin Bronze Sculptures section of the British Museum in central London.
And is also a fact that most of this bonze sculptures done at benin at that pre – historical age as being lost to the white .

The other fact i would let you know about Nigeria is that we were the second country talking about lagos Island in the 1800’s to have electricity after British, people would be like wow to hear that, and with that we done have stable light in Nigeria.

The primary function of CRIN is to conduct high quality research in cocoa, kola, and coffee as well as to provide facilities for teaching and research with these agricultural products.

Now in the education sector of Nigeria is also very hard, to get into the university; hard in the sense that a person has to write different form of exam : Waec, Jamb , and UTME before entering the university, it shouldn’t be like that it should be less complex , and when you have entered in the university with this complex procedure, you find out there is no job, #Hard, that is why youth of Nigeria sees education as bias, that is not necessary but it his, and the youth of Nigeria take a different part of making it live through Internet scamming also called bugger or G boy. I won’t blame them cause they do cause of the way the country his, is #Hard and Full of corruption.

Thirdly i would say that Nigeria is where it is today because of bad Government that knows the right thing to do, to make Nigeria better, but prefer making that pocket bigger or their bank account loaded. Even the constitution of Nigeria today sides this bad government, that only works went is time for election.

Lastly, don’t contradict me cause i love my country, i just want the government of this country to do the right thing, common are we not matured to have electricity 24 hours every day. and i would like to ask a question Who are to blame our Forefathers of Present Leaders?

As a teen we all have dreams and goals that we want to archive but sometimes distracted from our goals by some obstacles, me as a teenager i understand myself and understand every situation from childhood i wanted to be a doctor, i loved seen doctors and admired their work but never liked seeing blood and all those things, but as i grew my live interest changed i never wanted to be a doctor again cos at that time when i say how doctors are treated in my country i changed my dreams and goal to be a chemical engineer, and i know i would achieve it, adult see us little children not as wise as them and we make mistakes but that is how we grow, we are just misunderstood by them, our parents wants us to be like them act like them in virtue and all other attributes but we can be like them we are different, some parents would like their children to make a career form a course they choose with out knowing what are the children and might end up destroying is live later on cos that is not is dreams but their dreams.

Look at an instant i heard a story of a boy who wanted to study music but is parents wanted him to study medicine and be a doctor, he never liked it but he later read the course for up to a eight years after graduating he gave them all his diplomas and certificate making him officially a doctor and said”Dad and mom am giving this certificate of being a doctor cos have made ur dream come true is time i made ma dream come through to study music”, and he never used his certificate, they therefore waisted resources sending him to medical school cos he never used the certificate.

Inside London’s stunning $70M museum revamp

The Victoria and Albert Museum's new Exhibition Road Quarter was designed by Amanda Levete and her practice, <a href="http://www.ala.uk.com/" target="_blank">AL_A</a>.

The project also adds 11,840 square feet — about the size of five and a half singles tennis courts — of flexible gallery space to the museum to help accommodate the V&A’s headline exhibitions.

Hidden features

AL_A initially won the competition to design the extension in 2011. Since construction began in January 2014, the project has seen almost 800,000 cubic feet of earth (99% of which was recycled and reused for landscaping) excavated to make way for the new subterranean gallery and the courtyard above it.

Intended as a meeting point, public square and, of course, museum entrance, the pristine surfaces and crisp lines of the Exhibition Road Quarter sit in direct conversation with the ornate, 19th-century architecture of the original V&A building.

“Working in a building as historic and as beautiful as the V&A was maybe the opposite of a constraint,” says Levete. “If you can negotiate the threshold between modernity and history, then something is really beginning to connect and speak between the two centuries.”

(CNN)On May 1, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art opened its doors for the Met Gala, the annual invitation-only fundraiser to benefit the museum’s Costume Institute, and a launch party for its spring exhibition.

While it’s easy enough to enjoy a parade of designer dresses from the red carpet, a little context goes a long way. Here’s what you need to know about fashion’s most important party.

Has the Met Gala always been a big deal?

To the Costume Institute, yes. It’s the only curatorial department at the Met that has to finance its own activities, and the gala is its biggest fundraiser. The event was initially named the Party of the Year, but it’s only relatively recently that it fulfilled that promise.

From 1948 to 1971, the benefit wasn’t pegged to an exhibition, and was held off-site at the Waldorf Astoria or the Rainbow Room. Guests (mostly New York society types) indulged in fine dining and were entertained by “skits, raffles, and pageants of models in historic costume,” according to the museum’s records.

Former Vogue editor Diana Vreeland brought new glamor to the Costume Institute when she joined as a consultant in 1972. (CNN)A Miami Beach area swimmer has been bitten by what is thought to be a bull shark, a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman said.

The Florida beachgoer, who was not named, was in the process of exiting the waters after warnings from lifeguards to evacuate the water at Haulover Beach, which is about 8 miles (12 kilometers) north of Miami Beach.

“Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Ocean Rescue lifeguards became aware of the shark lurking in the water,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Erika Benitez said.

“Immediately, the lifeguards alerted people in the water by blowing their whistles, and gesturing for everyone to get out of the water.”

The swimmer was bitten in the lower extremities by the shark, thought to be a 4- to 5-foot long bull shark, she said, but managed to get out of the water. Lifeguards rendered aid.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Ocean Rescue lifeguards became aware of the shark lurking in the water and immediately alerted people in the water by blowing their whistles.

“The patient was transported by ground to a local hospital, (and their) injuries did not appear to be life-threatening,” Benitez said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue lifeguard Matt Sparling said, “In my 20 years as a lifeguard, this is the first time a person has been bitten here at Haulover Beach, and possibly the first for Miami-Dade County.”

“Although these incidents are rare, we still ask beachgoers to always be aware of their surroundings. Always swim near manned lifeguard towers and be sure to always heed all warnings issued by lifeguards.”

How the iPhone changed the world in just 10 years

On this day 10 years ago, lines of Apple faithful formed outside of the company’s stores across the U.S.

Some had staked out their spots days before. They brought folding chairs, umbrellas, sleeping bags and, in San Francisco, one mattress. Apple (AAPL, Tech30) handed out bottles of water. People offered to sell their spots in line for hundreds of dollars.

A few people were doing it for publicity, but many just wanted to be among the first to own the expensive new smartphone Apple had announced six months earlier.

It was the kind of dramatic frenzy any tech company would have killed for, and that Apple specializes in manufacturing. Luckily, its product would live up to the hype, selling more than a billion devices over a decade and changing technology forever.

“I think that everybody was very, very relieved that when the iPhone ultimately launched at the end of June in 2007, that it actually worked,” said tech journalist Fred Vogelstein, who wrote a book on the smartphone race between Apple and Google (GOOGL, Tech30).

Since that day, Apple has grown the iPhone into its most popular and reliable product. It sold more than 50 million iPhones in the first three months of 2017 alone, bringing in $33.2 billion.

Looking back at the first iPhone, its limitations seem quaint: It was expensive, starting at $499 for 4GB of memory; it only worked on AT&T’s EDGE network; and there was no App Store to speak of.

Now the company releases a new version of the device every year, sprinkling on new features like water resistance or a fingerprint sensor to entice people to upgrade. All of the specs have been radically improved over the years, from the chip to the camera resolution. And the original size looks quaint 10 years later — Apple now sells versions that are nearly two times as big.

The iPhone’s success has had a halo effect on other products and industries. Apple went on to make the iPad, a tablet version of the iPhone. It added an App Store to iOS in 2008. Developers have built careers and billion dollar companies on iPhone apps. Apple says developers around the world have earned more than $16 billion.

There’s even a movie based on characters that were made famous in iPhone games (that flopped, but still).

“It is truly remarkable that in the 10 year span of the iPhone being on the market, it has disrupted the telecom industry, the music industry, the television industry, the video industry, the computer industry, the communications industry — and that’s just a start,” said analyst Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies.

Not all the disruption has been in Apple’s favor. Released a year and a half after the iPhone, Google’s Android mobile operating system has been the biggest competitor to Apple’s iOS. Android phones accounted for 84% of the market in the first quarter of this year, according to Gartner.

Despite the competition, people still look to Apple for the next big thing. And after 10 years, it’s become restless.

Apple’s strength lies in its ability to take existing features and refine, repackage and market them as if they are brand new, according to Tuong Nguyen, an analyst at Gartner. He said the next industries it could push forward are augmented reality and voice interfaces, places where other companies are already doing more work.

For now, Apple is focusing on a special version of the iPhone that’s expected to come out this fall. It could have conductive charging and an edge-to-edge display. (CEO Tim Cook has blamed slumping iPhone sales on excitement for the new device.)

Whatever its features when it’s unveiled in September, whether mind-blowing or disappointing, people will still line up outside of Apple stores, excited to be the first to touch the latest creation.

FIRST MAN TO GET PREGNANT

A British man has made history by becoming the first male to give birth.

Hayden Cross made headlines around the world when he announced he was pregnant by a sperm donor, three years after becoming legally male through gender reassignment.

It is understood that the 21-year-old, who gave birth by caesarean in mid-June, is undergoing hormone treatment to complete his transition.

Cross, who was born Paige, told The Sun:

“She’s perfect in every way.

“She is so good. I’m so lucky.”

Mr Cross was born a girl and has lived as a man for three years, taking male hormones during the period.

During the course of his transition, he had asked the NHS to freeze his eggs before the process was completed to allow him to have children later in life.

But the NHS refused his request, prompting Mr Cross, from Gloucester, to use an anonymous sperm donor to go ahead with his pregnancy.

Mr Cross now plans to complete his gender realignment as soon as possible.

Recounting his pregnancy, he said:

“I faced the prospect of not becoming the man I’m supposed to be, physically, or a dad.

“So I didn’t feel like I had any choice but to have a baby now then get back to transitioning.

“In September I got pregnant by a sperm donation.

“I found the donor on the internet.

“I looked on Facebook for a group and found one — it’s been shut down now. I didn’t have to pay.

“The man came to my house, he passed me the sperm in a pot and I did it via a syringe.”

Cross, it was learnt, has no contact with the child’s biological dad and does not know his name.

He said at the time: “I found I was pregnant two weeks after the sperm was inserted.

“It was mixed emotions.

“I was happy but I also knew it would be backtracking on my transition.

“It’s like I have given myself one thing, but taken away something else.

“It’s a very female thing to carry a baby and it goes against everything I feel in my body.

“I was finally starting to become myself and become a man physically — but now my body is going in the opposite direction.”

D’banj Releases His New Album, ‘King Don Come’

Iconic Nigerian singer-songwriter, Oladapo Oyebanjo, known by his stage name D’banj, has released a new album titled “King Don Come.”

The artiste, also known as the “Koko Master”, announced on his Instagram handle that “King Don Come” will hit the markets on Friday.

He wrote: “#KingdonCome 7-7-17. Thank you Lord for your Grace.”

The project is the Kokomaster’s fourth solo studio album since he came into limelight 12 years ago.

The art work for the cover of the new album is designed in a very creative way to interpret the title “King Don Come”.

It was created by Nigerian visual Artist Nduka Abii, popularly known as Duks Arts, and it employed elements from the hit HBO TV series “Game Of Thrones.”

The album art depicts D’ banj as a medieval king sitting on a throne placed against the backdrop of a raging battle.

He is dressed in kingly robes and jewelry, with animal fur draping his shoulder, and his famous DB gold chain on his neck.

It portrays all that stands on the battle field, connoting a hard-fought victory that is straight from a legendary ‘story book’.

There are dragons all around and a baby fire-breather is perched on his arm, with two giant creatures loom behind his throne, and another flying in the sky.

D’banj who released his debut album ‘No Long Thing’ as a professional artiste in 2005, has strived to remained relevant in the fast-growing and competitive Nigerian music industry.

He was signed to artist of Mo’ Hits Records, and was also a member of its collective group, Mo’ Hits Allstars,a group that included artists Dr SID, Wande Coal, KaySwitch, and D’Prince.

On leaving Mo Hits Records, D’banj founded DB Records and signed his younger brother Kayswitch to the label alongside two producers, Jaysleek and Deevee.

The ‘Fall in Love’ crooner has won several music awards, including the awards for Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009.

He was also named Best International Act (Africa) at the 2011 BET Award, and the Best-selling African Artist at the 2014 World Music Awards, among other honours.

Some of his recent titles include ‘Extraordinary’, ‘Focus ‘and ‘Emergency’ released in 2016.
